Modern vs. Classic forehand

created on: 11/07/08

Oh, snowy days... no tennis today, but there's always YouTube. From a thread on TennisTalk, here's a great video showing the differences between the modern and classic forehand.

It's a little long, but definitely worth watching. Note how the player develops power from his legs' upward motion in the modern stroke, vs. from their forward motion in the classic stroke. I think I'm definitely more of a classic hitter, with a more linear body movement, but I like the idea of loading up power from the legs and reducing some of the strain on joints that comes from hitting forward through the ball.

For more great video breakdowns, check out Dan Brown's ImOnYourSideTennis.

So how about you? Are you a modern or classic forehand hitter?

Yeah, I've heard James Blake describe it as 'sitting in a chair and jumping out'. In practice though, I've gound it a but hard to do... I guess I'm a little more comfortable with the rhythm of stepping through the strike zone.

wow great video. the modern seems to be easier to setup for the shot, as well. i've noticed i like to bend down and jump in order to add power and this explains why i was doing that...

Thats fantastic!!! I am going to try to switch as soon as possible because i've noticed some strain in my knee as well, and I would rather not tear a ligament!
